KS1. Students could use a resource such as Anglia Campus’ Democracy in Athens (www.angliacampus.compublicprihistorygreekspage05.htm) to examine the key features of democracy in Ancient Greece and then investigate how ancient democracy was similar or different to modern democracy in Britain.
KS2. Look at the website United Kingdom Election Results (www.election.demon.co.uk) and see if you can spot patterns of election results which relate to other historical developments they have studied.
Lines of enquiry could include how the Reform Acts of 1832, 1867 and 1884 (which gave the vote to more men) affected or did not affect election results.
KS3-5. Use the University of Kent at Canterbury Cartoon Archive (http:library.kent.ac.ukcartoonscollectionscartoonhub.php) to get a feel for the ways in which politicians were raised or smeared throughout history. At GCSE and A-level, many students will study elections in Germany andor the USA. The German Propaganda Archive at Calvin University (www.calvin.eduacademiccasgpa) gives a powerful insight into the techniques used by the Nazis to seize power in 1933 and keep it. Students looking at the career of President Franklin D Roosevelt will find a similar wealth of material at the FDR Cartoon Archive (www.nisk.k12.ny.usfdrindex.html).
