A Holocaust education pack commissioned by the Scottish Executive and co-ordinated by East Renfrewshire Council’s education department will be sent out to every secondary school in Scotland over the coming months.

The Arts and the Holocaust: lessons from the past for citizens of today has been written by Katherine Morley and Tim Nunn, directors of the Glasgow-based theatre company Reeling Writhing. They have based the pack, which contains a “dynamic set of resources and stimuli for educational leaders and learners to explore together”, on a Holocaust memorial performance they produced last year with teenagers from East Renfrewshire secondary schools.

Like the performance, the pack features the true story of a group of non-Jewish, German university students who were interested in the arts and sought to undermine the Nazi regime by printing and distributing anti-government leaflets. Most of the group paid for their heroic action with their lives.

The pack has sections on the music, visual arts and literature of the war period and features DVDs and art cards. Many classroom-based activities are included.
