Craigton Primary in Glasgow’s Govan area is researching its own history as it prepares to celebrate its centenary in September.

Pupils from P7 and their teachers are working with archivists at their local library to view old school log books, the history of the school and staff lists.

Headteacher Ann Robertson said: “The school has been building up to 2011 for a couple of years now and everyone is looking forward to the celebrations - especially the street party we are organising and hoping to hold in the summer.”

Craigton Primary opened on September 4, 1911. The red sandstone three- floored building was built by Govan Parish and it stood on land that was bought by Glasgow merchant John Ritchie in the 18th century for his mansion, Craigton House.

The school building has survived two world wars: in the First World War, being used by the British Red Cross as a military hospital in 1918; and in the Second World War, surviving an air raid on July 19, 1940 where the headmaster of that time, commented: “Pupils behaved splendidly and marched to shelters as if it were ordinary `shelter drill’. Damage to school: two roof panes cracked and two shelter doors wrenched open. No one hurt.”
