To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, social enterprise organisation Archaeology for Schools is offering a Monarchs Workshop for key stages 2-3, delving into the history of the rulers of the British Isles.

What is it?

The workshops introduce students to the social, legal and religious developments brought in by the Anglo-Saxon kings and queens who forged much of our nation’s identity. The birth of English royalty is celebrated through activities including: writing royal epic poems; testing sword skills against an Anglo-Saxon warrior; and handling real artefacts that are more than 1,000 years old.

The workshop’s grand finale is a reconstruction of an Anglo-Saxon royal cremation. The class will have chosen a monarch and the task is to prepare them for the next life with gifts of weapons, jewellery, food and furniture.

The workshop is designed by archaeologists and fits neatly into the national curriculum topic Invaders and Settlers.
