Almost 1,500 secondary schools did not enter pupils for GCSE history last year, a Parliamentary answer revealed. Nick Gibb, Conservative shadow education minister, was given figures to show that 1,479 secondaries, including private and special schools, did not enter any pupils for history, 1,373 schools did not enter any pupils for a full modern language GCSE, and 1,516 more schools did not enter anyone for a geography GCSE. The Department for Education and Skills said a record number of pupils took history GCSEs last year with nearly a quarter of a million entries.
