Young people’s ignorance about war veterans will be addressed through new educational resources.

Sowing the Poppy Seed will be used in Scottish schools to educate pupils about the importance of Remembrance and issues that affect veterans in their communities today.

The resources, which can be downloaded online, are designed to dispel misconceptions about veterans.

Recent research has shown that many young people in Scotland are confused about the history behind Remembrance traditions, with 75 per cent having no idea what the abbreviation “VE” stands for. A number of pupils are also unaware that veterans are not only elderly men who served in the Second World War, but can be young men and women from recent conflicts.

Materials reflect A Curriculum for Excellence and include activity guides and research activities to support teachers. They include an image library, documentary and archive footage.

The project should grow in the next few years, but current materials are suitable for children aged eight to 14.

The new materials were designed by Poppyscotland - the organisation behind the Scottish Poppy Appeal - and Learning and Teaching Scotland, with help from Determined to Succeed, Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory, the Royal British Legion Scotland and the Scottish Screen Archive.
