The BBC has taken an unusual look at the history of the British Empire, with the help of Victoria Wood, the comedian.
Queen Victoria never visited the reaches of her vast realm, but a new programme sees her namesake make a tour in her place. The three-part documentary, Victoria’s Empire, takes viewers on an epic journey through the old Empire, from Hong Kong to Borneo, Ghana and India, looking for evidence that the British were there.
Interviews with locals with direct experience of colonisation reveal what the British got up to, and attitudes to their activities.
The next episode of Victoria’s Empire is on May 6, BBC One, 8pm.
