Seven decades after it was sunk in the waters around Orkney, the memory of “HMS Royal Oak” is being kept alive in Scottish classrooms.
The battleship was sunk in Scapa Flow by a German U-boat on October 14, 1939, with the loss of 833 lives, including 120 boys aged between 14 and 18. The tragedy, which took place just six weeks after the start of the Second World War, is the subject of educational resources available through Learning and Teaching Scotland.
