The directorate clearly had a fascinating weekend on that March day half a century ago. The following day found its members discussing the value of the Inspectorate. “As in the curriculum, it is necessary to cut out dead wood in the work of inspectors,” one noted.

J Meiklejohn, director of education in greater Musselburgh, aka East Lothian - an authority that even today appears to take a dim view of Her Majesty’s Inspectorate.
