Scottish Hockey will cast an eye over the best young players when it stages its National Primary Festival at Peffermill in Edinburgh on Wednesday. This will be the first national event for many youngsters, but the sports body has a good structure for retaining its young players, with international matches for Scotland’s Under-16 and Under-18 teams - boys and girls - and a series of summer camps.

There will be coaching camps for 10 to 13-year-olds at Fettes College, Edinburgh (July 6-8) and Loretto School, Musselburgh (July 27-29), where the emphasis will be on fun and developing skills. There will also be a coaching camp for 14 to 17-year-olds at the Hillhead Centre, University of Aberdeen (July 30-August 3).

Scottish Hockey will host development camps in Perthshire, covering nutrition, tactics, advanced skills and an in-depth look at the rules for 14 to 17-year-old boys (Strathallan School, July 20-22) and girls (Glenalmond College, July 22-27). A goal-keepers’ camp will be held at Strathallan.
