Exam chiefs are to step up efforts to showcase the best of young Scottish talent, following the selection of pupils’ artwork presented to the spouses of the leaders attending the G8 summit at Gleneagles last July.

The announcement was made by Anton Colella, Scottish Qualifications Authority chief executive, at a celebration in Edinburgh on Monday when prints of the eight paintings, first unveiled in The TES Scotland on July 1 last year, were handed to the pupils and their parents “as a lifetime memory of their special achievement”.

The originals now hang in some of the world’s most powerful corridors, including the White House and the Kremlin. They were chosen by Jack McConnell, the First Minister, and Bridget McConnell, head of culture and leisure in Glasgow City Council.

The prints have since been displayed in Brussels as one of the centrepieces of a “best of British” exhibition to mark the UK’s presidency of the European Union.

Mr Colella told Monday’s reception that the SQA is in discussions with the Scottish Parliament to exhibit the best artwork from each year’s exam diet.

Further developments might include having compositions taken up by one of the leading orchestras.
