Four S2 pupils from Prestwick Academy have won a competition to design a new dish for the local outlet of a restaurant chain.

“Salmon Melt Spaghetti” was produced by Brogan Caddis, Courtney Davidson, Gary Dunlop and Callum McLean. It consists of spaghetti mixed with cheese sauce and pancetta and topped with four parcels of mozzarella cheese wrapped in smoked salmon. The dish will be sold this month at the Frankie amp; Benny’s restaurant in Ayr.

The pizza and pasta challenge is in its second year, having started in 2009 when Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce initiated a partnership between the restaurant and Ayr’s Queen Margaret Academy. This year, the school was joined by Belmont, Kyle and Prestwick academies.

Loretta Lees, home economics teacher at Prestwick Academy, said: “It was great to see all pupils fully involved in preparing dishes in a business environment.

“This experience helps them to make connections between what they are learning in the classroom and the manufacturing and retail sector of the hospitality industry. The pupils’ innovative ideas and creative products have been very successful.”
