Baking, making and creating
This collection of resources contains recipes and ideas for baking and making in primary school. Cooking activities are a fun way to encourage healthy eating at school. They also give pupils a greater understanding of where food comes from.
For early years and key stage 1 (P1-3) pupils, rebecca_louise_691 shared a presentation for the interactive whiteboard on how to make your own bread.
There's plenty of baking, with recipes for biscuits, scones, muffins, jam tarts, bread and pizza, as well as crumbles. And there are good ideas for sandwiches, including the types of bread and fillings you can use - it even looks at sandwiches through the ages. Apparently the first recorded sandwich was made in 1BC by the famous rabbi Hillel the Elder, who started the Passover custom of sandwiching a mixture of chopped nuts, apples and spices between two matzohs to eat with bitter herbs.
To make healthy eating more fun, try GreatGrubClub's pirate-themed party food. Recipes for healthy treats such as a banana pirate ship and desert islands (fruit and jelly) are displayed on a treasure map, which can be used when teaching a pirate topic, or for fun.
Foodafactoflife has shared lesson ideas to aid the teaching of healthy living to five to eight-year-olds. There are recipes for healthy snacks such as fruit smoothies and fruit kebabs, as well as a series of cooking videos that show children how to prepare food safely.
Other resources include recipes and activities for foods from all over the world, which could easily be incorporated into geography lessons.
Send a Cow has shared instructions for an African banana snack, and there's an Indian-style buffet with a tomato chutney as the centrepiece.
