Jilly Cooper, high priestess of the bonkbuster, confides that progress on her new education-based novel is being held up by a character glut.

Deadlines are approaching on the project, which Jilly embarked on back in 2001, and she admits a cull of bit-part characters may be in the offing.

But what a waste. The Diary invites responsible readers who believe they may be able to offer a caring home for an impossibly priapic lover or a raven-haired beauty to apply in the strictest confidence to diary@tes.co.uk. But remember, a Jilly Cooper character is for life.
