Hong Kong
Favourite place when you have a dayweek off?
I live in Stanley, on the south side of the island. It’s a village version of Hong Kong and quiet in the week. My day off would be preceded by a Friday night in the Smugglers’ Inn on Main Street. The evening goes on until about 3am or until people fall over.
The barmaids are up for the craic (if there’s a way to spell that in Filipino) - they give you chasers to get rid of you when they’ve had enough.
Restaurants for a special night out?
The Pacific Grill in Staunton Street in Soho next to the escalator has modern Australian food, with good ingredients combined by clever chefs. The fruit pavlova is to die for.
The best evening?
If I have visitors, I take them up the Peak tram to see the sunset over Kowloon and the harbour. We have a drink at Cafe Deco, then hare down to the harbour in a cab and cross the water to Tsim Sha Tsui.
We have another in Felix’s Bar at the top of the Peninsula hotel - just one because drinks are expensive at about pound;8 or pound;9. Then we take a taxi to Temple Street market where a can of Carlsberg is HK$7 (50p), and you can haggle and buy Hong Kong tat.
We will eat there at a dai pai dong (street food stall) where they use toilet tissue for napkins and you would struggle to spend pound;10 a head.
Then it’s back to Lan Kwai Fong (the nightclub district in Central). At the back of Rat Alley there is a bar called Le Jardin with a good jukebox, which is far less pretentious than some.
Vistors beware
Don’t be surprised if you meet friendly “ladies of the night” later on in Lan Kwai Fong, but Hong Kong is very safe
