Three Scottish primary schools have had the chance to put “Trigger”, a mechanical horse, through its paces in a nationwide drive to create new interest in horses and riding throughout the UK, particularly among children.

Moredun Primary in Edinburgh, Lumphinnans Primary in Fife and Auchterarder Primary in Perthshire were among schools being visited thi summer as part of the Jeep National Riding Festival to give youngsters a chance to try riding. The aim is to introduce 200,000 new and lapsed riders to the sport.

Riding is enjoyed by 2.4 million children and adults, the festival organisers say, compared with 1.4 million who take part in amateur football.
