The company that produces Scotland’s most famous lager has opened the country’s first “pub academy” to train staff in the hospitality industry.

Tennent’s has invested pound;1 million in converting a derelict building at its Wellpark Brewery in Glasgow, which now houses training rooms including a bar, beer cellar and professional kitchen.

These will be used to train people for a range of roles, from bar work to management; there are also Modern Apprenticeship placements. Courses include training in mixology, customer service, wine and spirit training, cellar management, door security, cookery, health and safety and business management.

Mike Lees, managing director of Tennent Caledonian Breweries, said: “The facility is for people who want to know everything, like how you pour beer or prepare food or the business aspects of running a pub.”
