During the summer term, it is useful to raise pupils’ awareness of different holiday safety issues. Now is a good time to approach this subject, with the lighter evenings, the school holidays fast approaching and the fact that Year 6 pupils may be given more freedom in preparation for secondary school.

Begin by getting your pupils to suggest places where they need to take greater care about safety. Split the class into groups and give each group an area of safety to research. Safety leaflets can be obtained from many organisations in advance and there are some excellent online safety activities aimed at key stage 2.

Each group should spend 20 minutes finding out the key safety messages for their area and then prepare a presentation to report back to the class through a short play, song or poster. You may wish older primary pupils to comment on how effective they have found the leaflets and websites Elizabeth Smith is a primary teacher who is on a short career break
