Teachers should benefit from a European Court of Justice ruling which rejects the British Government’s attempt to veto the working time directive (setting a maximum working week of 48 hours).

Nigel de Gruchy, general secretary of the National Union of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers, said recent surveys showed teachers work considerably longer than 48 hours. His union has called for a change to teachers’ contracts which require them to work unlimited hours.
