Secondary school was a frustrating and, at times, unhappy experience for Lauren Selfridge, whose life has been turned around by the June start programme.

The Dunfermline High pupil achieved nine Standard grades this summer but, as she has a December birthday, was faced with hanging on at school until Christmas.

Instead, Lauren enrolled on the June start programme to kick-start her career as a nursery nurse.

She admitted: “I wasn’t getting on with my teachers and my attendance at school wasn’t good. I just didn’t want to be there. At college you’re treated like an adult and call the tutors by their first name. I really enjoy it.”

Lauren’s father Eoin has noticed a change for the better in his daughter’s attitude at home.

He said: “Lauren’s become much more considerate since starting college. She helps around the house and even offers to make her mum and me a cup of coffee now.”
