HULL education authority is planning after-school classes and more lessons on computers after GCSE league table results revealed its schools were ranked bottom for the third year running.
Less than a quarter (23.4 per cent) of pupils in the city’s secondary schools achieved at least five A*-C grades, far below the national average of 47.9 per cent. Kingswood high school in Hull came 13th from the bottom out of nearly 4,000 schools. Hull’s pass rate has improved by only half a per cent on last year, despite an improved inspection report in June.
A local newspaper poll of parents reveals that many believe the root cause of the problem lies in social deprivation and lack of discipline.
Ann Arnold, mother of two children at Kingswood, said: “At some schools, such as Kingswood, teachers are getting tough on discipline and the disruptive people.
“But the council needs to make sure that other schools follow suit. If pupils aren’t interested in academic work then teachers should find other things to involve them, like GNVQs.”
