What is it?

Mairi Hedderwick’s Katie Morag series of books, set on the fictional Isle of Struay, are inspiring cross-curricular lessons. This collection comprises resources developed from these much-loved stories.

What’s in it?

As well as materials for island topics in geography, this collection sneaks in some word work, reading comprehension, maths, and even a little bit of science. Among the geography highlights are lifeoutreach’s scheme of work for island life, using maps and plans. Or try ejbrigg’s worksheet on Struay to get pupils engaged with using a compass and identifying landmarks.

What else?

For some cross-curricular fun, ask pupils to write their own island adventure using the vocabulary they have learnt from the stories. Or help them develop a role-play for an island exploration. What would they find? Where would they go? What animals might they see?
