Toys from the past - history KS1

Studying historical toys is a tried and tested way of encouraging children to look at some of the changes that have taken place in everyday lives over the past 50 years or so. A PowerPoint from ruthbentham shows an impressive range of toys from 1900 through to the present day, presented in chronological order.

Print them off and share them between groups of pupils to discuss what materials they are made of and the similarities and differences between them. Did children from past generations play in a different way?

To add a seasonal flavour to the topic, look at kmed2020‘s toy sorting resources - an interactive PowerPoint asks pupils to sort Santa’s mixed-up toys into “past” and ‘present”, with a paper-based worksheet to accompany it. Increase the complexity of sorting by adding in some images from ruthbentham’s presentation.
