War Horse: from page to screen to schools

A highly successful novel, a phenomenal stage production, and now a major Hollywood film, there is no better time to explore the story of War Horse.

The National Army Museum and Film Education have teamed up to offer an exciting array of teaching materials that explore the War Horse story through key stage 3 history and English.

On Friday 13 January, the museum is hosting a one-day CPD event for teachers, exploring the text from a number of standpoints, including:

- responding to the main issues arising in War Horse;

- evaluating and assessing interpretations of the past;

- considering why different events, people and situations are interpreted in different ways;

- connecting ideas, experiences, texts and words.

The event includes a visit to the War Horse: Fact and Fiction exhibition, which opened in October 2011 and offers a chance to explore Film Education’s new online resource focusing on Steven Spielberg’s adaptation.

Interspersed with content from the novel, play and film, the exhibition explores the history of real war horses and their vital role on the battlefield. School visits are free, but must be booked in advance. Film Education will also be hosting free school film screenings nationwide throughout January.
