Tom Hunter did not mince his words during his General Teaching Council for Scotland lecture. Yes, he was a capitalist, a wealthy individual, a philanthropist - and a proud Scot. So what?

That should have taken the wind out of any critic’s sails. But Gavin Roberts, a proud leftie, wasn’t impressed. “You sound more like the minister than the minister does,” Roberts told him.

Hunter was more than happy to be honest. When he received a very large cheque for the sale of his Sports Division business, he had a typical west of Scotland response: “Ya beauty.”

And, he said, he sends his children to an independent school.

Ouch!
