Many politicians perform well in the “misuse of evidence” event but the prime minister’s recent pronouncements on school sports surely place him in a league of his own. Having just seen 65 Olympic medals won by Team GB athletes brought up in what he sneeringly and inaccurately calls a culture of “prizes for all”, he advocates a return to the 1950s and 1960s and an emphasis on competitive team sports. The trouble is that at the 1960 Olympics in Rome, Great Britain took home just 20 medals.
