Ice-cream vans face 'exclusion'

Ice-cream vans could be banned from trading near schools, if a proposed exclusion zone gets the go-ahead.

An amendment to the education and inspection Bill aims to set up a no-go area for mobile food-sellers around schools. The proposal is being considered by the Confederation of Children's Services Managers and due to be tabled in a couple of weeks.

Ice-cream vendors who are already coping with the impact of Ofsted regulation of school food, say it will add to their difficulties. Mark Gossage, chief executive of the Ice Cream Alliance, said: "I am a school governor, I have kids at school, but it is like everything else - it is moderation."
