ICELAND: A teachers’ strike has shut high schools in Iceland for nearly two months.
The strike, which began on November 7, is the longest such action by Icelandic teachers who are seeking to bring to an end what they say is a 30 per cent discrepancy between teachers’ salaries and those ofother university-educated employees.
With a basic salary of 130,000 krona (pound;1,000) a month, teachers are among the lowest-paid employees. The strike affects 19,000 pupils aged 16 to 20, many of whom are at a critical stage of preparing for university entrance. Richard Middleton
