Rob Roy - The Movie until July 8 Hollywood Stars July 13 - August 28 Shambellie House, New Abbey, Dumfriesshire tel 01387 850375

Scotland’s national museum of costume has two all-star family shows running this summer with a programme of complementary workshops. The Rob Roy exhibition features original costumes from the 1995 movie and visitors can have a shot at making a Rob Roy shield, a Celtic brooch, a miniature set design or tartan costumes for peg dolls.

Hollywood Stars allows you to get up close with a host of glittering gowns worn by first ladies of the silver screen such as Elizabeth Taylor, Nicole Kidman and Julie Christie.

1901 - A Time of Change Tuesdays - Saturdays throughout July Methil Heritage Centre, Lower Methil, Fife tel 01333 422100

This local history exhibition focuses on a time of huge change 100 years ago. Queen Victoria had just died, Britain was the world’s greatest super power and, in the Levenmouth area, traditional fishing communities were being swallowed by the growing coal industry. Photographs and documents from the local archives will be complemented by costumes, a penny-farthing bicycle and a working Meccano coal hoist.

Caol Crafts throughout July Inverness Museum and Art Gallery tel 01463 237114

Inverness Museum is the venue for the launch of an unusual travelling exhibition of contemporary crafts. The show has been curated entirely by pupils from Caol Primary school in the Highlands. They were inspired by work they have done in recent years with an artist-in-residence and a local craft maker. The Caol crafts team received National Lottery funding to create the show, which features their own work, specially commissioned pieces from professional British crafts people, information about the project and craft workshops for visitors.

Those Were the Days until July 4 Kirkcudbright Museum July 14 - September 1 Stranraer Museum, tel 01776 705088 from September 8 Dumfries Museum

This fun, touring exhibition focuses on popular leisure activities in Dumfries and Galloway during the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, especially on dancing, the cinema, music and fashion. The show was launched at the Historic Resources Centre in Annan, where curator Anne Ramsbottom says children of all ages had a great time dressing up in kaftans and Bay City Rollers trousers and playing with space hoppers and hula hoops.

Treasures from Pompeii until August 4 Aberdeen Art Gallery tel 01224 523770

Visitors to Aberdeen Art Gallery this summer will get a hint of what it was like to live in the ancient Italian town of Pompeii. The ground floor of the gallery has been transformed to simulate Pompeiian architecture, as a backdrop to famous works of art from the Vesuvian site which have never been seen in Britain before. These include the peacock fresco from the Villa Asellius and a group of statues from the royal palace of Oplontis.

Sea Shore Life all summer Broughty Castle, Dundee tel 01382 436916

Broughty Castle is a 15th-century military fort only a short bus ride from the centre of Dundee. It is open seven days a week in the summer and admission is free. There are exhibitions on the local whaling industry and the castle’s military history but the Sea Shore Life show is proving particularly popular with children. They can see the shells, seaweed and wildlife on display and then look out for similar examples on the beach.

The Unknown Cathedral until September 1 Orkney Museum, Tankerness House, Kirkwall, tel 01856 873191

St Magnus Cathedral is Orkney’s most visited tourist attraction. This exhibition focuses on its fascinating history and architecture, highlighting parts of the medieval cathedral that are out of bounds or might be overlooked. Visitors can find out more about the cathedral’s carvings, the dungeon where prisoners were kept, the loft where the hangman’s ladder is stored and the period when Cromwell’s troops stabled horses there, plus there are activities for children.

Australian Dreaming until October 6 City Arts Centre, Edinburgh tel 0131 529 3993

Contemporary textiles and paintings are featured in this celebration of the life and art of today’s Aboriginal communities in Australia. Showing alongside them are photographs of the Arnhem Land Community, which is home to many of Australia’s estimated 136,000 Aborigines.

A programme of workshops for children and adults will run throughout the summer: booking is essential.
