I’m encouraged by Ofsted’s TellUs3 survey, which asked young people whether they like school, among other things. My experience as pupil and teacher says that they do, but for the wrong reasons: fun, being with their friends, football, school trips.

A better question would be, “What do you dislike about school?” The truth would then come out and we might discover why negative attitudes exist, why teachers are baited, why vandalism occurs, why work isn’t done, and why lessons are skipped.
