Mark Hilton is wrong to suggest that teachers are held in low esteem because “they are thick” (“Small wonder professional status is so low,” Letters, 4 May). Perhaps he is not aware that teaching is a graduate profession. Maybe the reason his deputy head neighbour was unaware of the elections of 2005 and 2010 is because she was working all hours to educate the children of people like him. Honestly, I find his ignorance “astounding”.
