Ill-fated unions

The new year promises fireworks between two big classroom unions with the decision by the NASUWT to hold its conference in the first week of the Easter holidays, seven days earlier than normal. This might not seem like aggression, but to seasoned union-watchers it’s virtually an act of war as it now clashes with the conference of its arch-rival, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers.

That leaves the second week of Easter clear for the NUT - Jon the face of it, good news for the biggest and most quarrelsome of unions. But will that leave it trailing in the media stakes?

Expect the NASUWT and ATL to grab the best headlines, leaving NUT-ers with predictable “militant teachers go bonkers again” stories.
