Contrary to your report (TES, August 2), I did not describe junior education and employment minister Cheryl Gillan as being “the worst minister who has ever spoken to PAT [the Professional Association of Teachers]”.

We are not in the habit in PAT of engaging in public criticism of our guests.

It is true that I criticised Ms Gillan’s speech as the worst I had ever heard by a politician at PAT conference. The distinction is an important one.
