Chancellor Gordon Brown promises more money for education (“Schools pot is topped up”, TES, December 8). This is a good thing, I suppose. Buildings will be refurbished, equipment renewed.
I am uneasy, however, about the billions of pounds poured into education over the years, much of it wasted on teaching unpalatable subjects to unreceptive minds.
No one forced to learn against his will is going to do it successfully. It is time we recognised the need for choice in young people`s educational careers. They need to get with what they are good at.
Languishing attempts to fulfil other people`s learning ambitions will merely continue the massive waste inherent in our illogical approach to conveying knowledge.
