A survey is being conducted to find out the exact numbers of teachers who are registered or registrable in independent schools. The vast majority are believed to be.

Talks have been held with the Scottish Council of Independent Schools and although there is no agreement yet on compulsory registration the General Teaching Council is likely to be automatically informed if a teacher is dismissed for misconduct.

The GTC was concerned that such teachers may find work at another independent school. Ivor Sutherland, its registrar, said the move was a “bit of a success story”. Mr Sutherland added: “There was absolutely no connection between the council and the substantial number of teachers who work in the independent sector.”

The GTC will also be involved in running courses for probationers in independent schools.
