A cigarette manufacturer and an arms company are among organisations signed up to a new scheme to recruit science, maths and technology teachers from industry. A total of 48 companies and organisations have signed up to the Transition to Teaching scheme, including British American Tobacco and BAE Systems. Under the initiative, run by the Training and Development Agency for Schools, companies promote the benefits of teaching in state schools to workers considering a career change. In return, supporters of the project say companies get to “enhance their corporate image”. The pound;5 million scheme aims to recruit 325 teachers per year over the next three years.
