THE number of infants taught in classes of more than 30 pupils has risen slightly compared to last year. Provisional statistics from the Department for Education and Skills show that 10,576 children or 0.7 per cent of the total were taught in classes with 31 or more pupils in September 2002, compared to 8,000 (0.5 per cent) last year. This year 19 classes were found to be illegally large compared to 68 in 2001. A further 114 classes are still under investigation.
