For the European Year of Languages 2001, the Department for Education and Employment has appointed a UK co-ordinator from the Centre for Information on Language Teaching. The aim of the Year is to involve all 47 countries associated with the Council of Europe and European Union member states in a celebration of languages and language learning. Sheffield can lay claim to being a pioneer in the early teaching of modern languages. Ten nurseries and nursery schools teach French, German or Spanish to their under-fives. Teachers are supported in some centres by native speakers, young European volunteers and international students.
