It specialises in the history of English domestic interiors, taking visitors on a walk through time from 1600 to the present day.
The permanent displays contain a wealth of interesting artefacts, from 17th century oak furniture and panelling to the splendour of the Georgian period. And 20th century style is also on display with a 1930s flat and a loft conversion from the 1990s.
The museum includes a bookshop containing useful resources for design and technology teachers and there is an education programme for children and adults.
People unable to visit the museum can take virtual tours on the website.
The centre is also in the process of putting its collections online and the first phase of the project will be completed by early 2008.
The museum is housed in the former almshouses of the Ironmongers’ Company and the buildings themselves can provide the inspiration for architectural discussions.
