“WELL, for a start there are substantial cash prizes: There are hundreds of thousands of pounds of prize money to be won...” Not the host of a TV game show but the latest flyer from the Teaching Award Trust asking heads to nominate members of their staff.

Doubtless I am out of kilter with the rest of the profession but I feel trivialised and condescended to. I believe its gratest value is in providing an insight into our political masters’ fascination with hype, the sound bite and easily manipulated targets. None of these of course is a substitute for a true understanding of the issues involved in assuring quality education for our children.
