The Education Minister confirmed this week that he had accepted the view of his advisers and agreed to restrict the intake levels to teacher training next session because newly qualified teachers cannot find jobs.
Raymond Robertson said there would be 700 places on the four-year primary BEd course, 250 on the one-year primary postgraduate course, and 800 for secondary postgraduate students. A further 250 trainees will be admitted to the secondary BEd courses in PE, music and technological education. Secondary concurrent courses will account for another 175 places.
Mr Robertson urged local authorities and teacher training institutions to work together to ensure demand met supply, particularly for secondary specialists and Gaelic-medium primary teachers.
