Professor Bernard Crick’s piece about the two books on citizenship, one by Liam Gearon and the other edited by Robert Jackson, is surely an example of how not to write a book review (TES, March 5).
He simply uses the two books as an excuse to talk about himself. While we may all be deferential to an old man’s memories, the old man himself ought to take note of the intellectual labours and efforts of the young generation.
It isn’t good enough to condescend from a great height, and the biographer of George Orwell, the least proud of writers, should know this.
