St Barbara’s Primary in Muirhead, North Lanarkshire, has earned a Full International School award for 2010-2013.

The British Council accolade recognises schools committed to promoting understanding of other countries. The school had to submit evidence of strengthening its international dimension within the everyday curriculum.

St Barbara’s is partnered with schools in Poland, Romania, Turkey and Spain. It runs Fair Trade projects, has charity links with Ethiopia, as well as a cluster group partnership in the Confucius programme, which promotes cross-curricular activities on China.

Headteacher Sheelah McKinney said the school was keen for children to learn as much about other countries and cultures as possible, but also for parents and the wider community to be involved.

The school is planning more projects, including a twinning with a school in French Polynesia.
