Thousands of sixth-formers are using the internet to cheat on their university application forms, with one in 20 candidates copying material from websites when writing their personal statements, according to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service.

It plans to double its team of investigators responsible for uncovering plagiarised personal statements and fraudulent applications from abroad.
