The Economic and Social Research Council’s teaching and learning research programme has commissioned research worth pound;10 million into issues that should make a real difference in the classroom.
Its on-line newsletter for schools allows a quick dip into what is going on. A current piece from Helen Demetriou and Jean Ruddock, of Homerton College Cambridge, describes two case studies that encourage us to pay more attention to what pupils know about learning. A primary school under special measures was rescued, at least in part, by the head’s commitment to involving pupils in discussions about learning and what would help them to learn better.
The second case study on a secondary school shows how pupils who set their own learning targets are more likely to do the necessary work to achieving them.
