For some of us, maths is a secret phobia. Canadian teacher C Rick Seaman reports on his interviews with three primary teachers whose long-standing maths anxiety has finally been overcome. They are now able to talk about their “comfort zone” and to teach maths well. Seaman’s report, at http:www.ex.ac.ukPErnestpome11art16.htm appears in the current Philosophy of Mathematics Education Journal, edited by Paul Ernest from the University of Exeter. Its editorial marks Labour’s report card with some “must do betters” and argues strongly for encouraging fundamental and practical or prescriptive educational research. The contents page is at http:www.ex.ac.ukPErnestpome11contents.htm from which address the whole journal can be downloaded as a word-processed document for bedtime reading.
