Nearly 200 Worcestershire headteachers lobbied Parliament last week over education funding and around 300 of the county’s governors are expected to do the same next Wednesday.

Worcestershire - one of the worst-funded councils in the country - gained an extra pound;1.35 million in David Blunkett’s pound;52m handout this week.

Yet the fight in the county over the way ministers allocate money to local government goes on. “We are delighted that the gap in funding that existed is being bridged,” said Julien Kramer, Worcestrshire’s director of educational services. However, the fundamental problem of the unjust funding system remains.”

Mr Cledwyn-Davies, head of Droitwich Spa high and chair of the Worcestershire Headteachers Forum, added: “It goes halfway towards meeting our shortfall in maintaining current policies. But it doesn’t address the whole issue of the iniquities of the formula.”

The seven Worcestershire MPs, who include education junior minister Jacqui Smith, have each received around 500 protest letters.
