More than one in three Jewish Israeli 17-year-olds hates Arabs, two-thirds oppose giving Arabs in Israel equal rights and fewer than one-third would be willing to host an Arab in their homes, according to a survey by the Carmel Institute for Social Research.

The study of nearly 3,700 pupils carried out in spring 1994 and published this month, showed Jewish students in state religious schools to be generally more anti-Arab than their peers in state secular schools.It revealed that almost half of Israeli Arabs would serve in the Israeli Defence Forces, a move opposed by the majority of Jewish pupils.
