To Newcastle college, which was keen to give the impression that it was managing pretty well, despite the fact that many of its staff were stomping their feet on a freezing picket line on Tuesday morning, rather than teaching students.

The principal, Jackie Fisher, told the Evening Chronicle, the city’s local paper, that the college would be “open as usual to staff and students”.

Oh really?

A letter sent by the college to its students was less optimistic. It said:

“Unfortunately, we cannot tell you in advance whether teaching staff will be available”. It went on to suggest that “you may feel that it is better for you to work at home on March 1 and we will understand if you decide to do so”.
