The government has announced that all pupils who take the new English Baccalaureate will have to study a “hard” computer studies syllabus and not a “soft” ICT application skills one as at present. As a former teacher and ICT inspector, I have witnessed Britain’s struggle to find suitably qualified IT teachers. Where will we find computer studies teachers who are more than computer programmers but gifted enough to ensure that pupils of all abilities gain the level of conceptual understanding required?
